When Setting Goals, Don’t Forget Passion

Here’s my two cents:  Don’t forget passion.  I’m convinced that most of our goals fail because we’re not that passionate, deep down, about achieving them.  You fall off your diet not because you forgot your goals or didn’t move the tabs in your DayTimer or lost your motivational CD.  You fell off your diet because you’re more passionate about hot fudge sundaes than fitting back into 2003’s jeans.

Owning a business is hard work… it’s a challenge to keep your enthusiasm up day after day.  And, contrary to popular belief, money is not the ultimate motivation for most of us.  In fact, I have set the goal to Be More Greedy! 20 years running and have failed each year (much to the dismay of my impoverished future heirs).  I believe most business owners have a secret desire to change the world… if only locally… if only in some small way.

So here’s my goal:  On Dec. 31, 2007, I’d like to do a Google search on “franchise opportunities,” as if I were a prospective franchise owner looking for a franchise opportunity.  And there, among the normal pages and pages of hype, hyperbole, exaggerated claims, and downright lies, I’d like to find that, for the first time, I’ve sprinkled some sound advice, some cautionary warnings, and - dare I say it? - truth.  I’d like to find a few comments posted (even if I have to leave them myself)saying “thanks for warning me about that landmine,” or “thanks for turning me on to this great opportunity.”

And then I’ll eat an enormous hot fudge sundae, and happily check my email to see if any widows of deposed African dictators want to send me a few million dollars to invest for them.
