Tips for Commuting to Your Home Business

(FranchisePick.Com)  Where I grew up, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway pretty much kept everyone on track.

Each morning, my father joined the commuters that moved briskly along the sidewalks, descended the metal stairs, and stationed themselves in little groups on the platform at the precise spots where the doors would open at precisely the same time each morning.

There was no room for discussion or debate.  You were either in your spot at the right time, or you were quickly reminded that there was no good second alternative.

The train was a precise and no-nonsense taskmaster… and a great mentor.

When my father started running his consulting business from home after an entire career in corporate America, he continued to get up as if he were leaving for the train.  Even when he had no appontments or meetings, he put on a suit and pressed shirt, tied his tie, ate a quick breakfast, and commuted upstairs to what was once my bedroom and was now his office.

It probably seems pretty illogical to those who have never worked from home for an extended period.

Those who have can have probably learned that seemingly illogical approaches are sometimes the most logical approaches of all.

At least when you work where you can’t hear the train horn blow, and there’s no one on the platform that you can line up behind.

Even tho we are working from home, it pays to have a set schedule of when to work and when to take off. It also helps to have a designated area of your home that is specifically for work so that you get into the right mind set. I am much more productive when I have a scheduled environment to work in.

Great Post Sean. a plan and definate hours of work are essential to my working day. You also have to train your nearest and dearest that you are not playing but slogging away. You also have to ignore arbitary attempts to penetrate your privacy, doorbells ringing, friends who drop by, children underfoot. these are the challenges the rewards are many too if you can discipline yourself.

Sickness and downtime are two other things that have to be factored in to the free-lancers life.
My Sean the queens knees satisfactory in their recovery. Although not quite as good as the bees knees, yet. We are positive the Queen will be back in her throne next week.
PS. Cest la Vie is French for thats life not Italian.
