Roger Wilco battles Roger Wilco over "Roger Wilco"
(FranchisePick.Com) Phillyburbs.com reports that there’s a battle of the bottle brewing between liquor store franchise company Roger Wilco and its ex-franchisee, who now goes by the catchy name Discount Liquor World.
Seems that a Burlington liquor store has operated for the past 19 years as Roger Wilco, the only franchisee of a chain liquor store with locations in Palmyra and Pennsauken. Earlier this year, the franchise agreement expired and the franchisees opted not to renew.
The owners took down the Roger Wilco sign and came up with their own spiffy name: Discount Liquor World.
Now new Roger Wilco franchisees John Parrish and Kevin Mooney are planning to open a new Roger Wilco liquor store just 500 feet away from Discount Liquor World nee Roger Wilco.
The owners of Discount Liquor World are enraged and are trying to get the city to prevent it from opening by denying their request for a liquor license.
According to representatives of Discount Liquor World: “This is a calculated effort to put us out of business.” They’ve presented the City Council with a petition with signatures from 805 customers who oppose the opening of the new store.
The attorney for the applicants, John Vassallo, denied that his clients wanted to put Discount Liquor World out of business, but acknowledged that they wanted to capitalize on the Roger Wilco name.
Pretty smart, really. Maybe Roger Wilco should have paid the franchise fees… or at least bought the lot next door.
