Opportunity Ahead for Head Lice Franchise; Nitpickers Wanted
It’s a louse-y job, but somebody’s got to do it.
It seems there was an NPR story today on the growing number of nit-picking services, and at least one head lice franchise opportunity. This came to my attention via two simultaneous emails from colleagues… one about Lice Squad and the other about Hair Fairies.
Canada-based LiceSquad Inc® (not to be confused with Lice Busters, their website points out) and its team of professional Lice Detectives® “have been compared to the Molly Maid franchise of house cleaning.” We have received many customer service awards and have been featured in countless newspaper, TV and radio shows as being the leader in safe and effective head lice removal services and products.
According to their website, the Ontario franchise territory is almost sold out, (much to the dismay of Ontarian headlice, no doubt) but most of the rest of North America is available to picky investors. I will say that the franchise owners on the Lice Squad website look downright excited to be Lice Detectives® and Lice Squad franchisees. Perhaps some will leave comments and shed some light on the appeal of this opportunity other than great pun potential.
I know one real advantage of the Lice Squad franchise is the additional growth potential for branching out into bed bugs, scabies and other parasites… a big plus.
If Lice Squad seems enthusiastic, Hair Fairies seem positively exuberant about being in
the de-lousing business. According to their website, “Hair Fairies is the only full service salon in Los Angeles and Manhattan dedicated to removing head lice safely, effectively and in a kid-friendly environment… In business since 1999, we have rid thousands of children and families from these persistent parasites.”
Like that of their Canadian counterparts, the Hair Fairies website emphasizes education, and explains: “Head lice are small, wingless insects which feed on human blood. They need human blood in order to survive.” No wonder the fairies are so cheerful! They are vampire slayers with nit combs and tweezers.
Despite the NPR reference to franchises, I don’t think Hair Fairies is currently franchised (or licensed). Will that change in the future? Only the Hair Fairies know for sure.
I’m not really sure if there are other head lice-related franchises, but it seems like there are lively opportunities ahead for these two companies.

A BIG thanks for your feedback and comments on LiceSquad. Yes we love our jobs and we look forward to being able to help many more communities as we grow. One unique feature about LiceSquad is that we have on site access that allows our teams to screen large groups of children at schools, camps and daycare cnetres. This is a huge part of our franchise service. Many familes feel most comfortable having this concern treated in thier own home. This is why we chose the on site vrs salone setting. It also allows us to keep the costs lower for our customers and allows us to reach a greater area of service to those that need help. We are looking forward to the years ahead and to new technology and tools that may further help us in our battle against the bugs.

I just wanted to say a BIG thanks for your comments and for the exposure on our comapny. Yes it is a pleasure to do this work and I am sure any of LiceSquad’s franchisee and contractos will agree that this is rewarding work. One thing that makes us distinctive is our ablilty to see and treat large groups of people. This is why we chose a model of in home/on site VRS a salon seeting. It allows us to keep the cost low for our cutomers and gives us a larger reach and the opportunity to send out teams to schools, camps, and daycare centres to screen and treat for lice. Many familes are also more comfortable being seen in their own homes becasue there still seems to be a stigma attached to this issue. Our cutomers parrecite the confidentiality. We look forward to being able to serve many more families and communites as we grow. I welcome any enquieries from those who have it in their hearts to help others with this issue.
Yours for a lice and chemical free world,

I would like information on how I would go about getting my own service started in my community. It seems like the schools, even the high schools are swamped with this problem. As a parent myself I know sometimes we could use the help due to work, etc. not allowing us proper time to follow through with all of the necessary steps needed to eliminate the problem. Most people seem to be too embarrassed to ask for help or simply don’t know there are people willing to help them. I’m seriously interested in starting my own business. What are the guidelines? Are there any legal issues? I’ve always helped neighbors and family and friends, why not the rest of the community? Please help me with any information you may have. Thank you. Sincerely, Dana Bussell

I’d recommend getting in touch with Dawn at LiceSquad.com. She’s the world’s premiere nitpicker and a very nice woman. Click on “Lice Squad” in the right column… I think her contact info is in the comments section on one of the LS posts.
