Is Straw Hat Pizza America’s Hottest Franchise?

by sean on April 2nd, 2008

strawhat (FranchisePick.Com)  Is Straw Hat Pizza America’s Hottest Franchise?  I must be one of them.  How can I tell?  Because according to a Straw Hat Pizza press release they were just given the “coveted award” by “America’s Hottest Franchises (AHF), a show celebrating the best and brightest franchise opportunities.”

Congratulations, Straw Hat Pizza and President Jonathan Fornaci!

SAN RAMON, Calif. - (Business Wire) Straw Hat Pizza was named one of the “hottest franchises” when America’s Hottest Franchises (AHF), a show celebrating the best and brightest franchise opportunities presented its inaugural awards on its pilot show.

“Winners of the coveted award came from a wide range of industries, but all met and exceeded the selection criteria set out by the AHF review board,” said the show’s host Dara Lopata. “Nominees for this award were judged on a myriad of criteria including, but not limited to marketing programs, responsiveness during the investigation process, financing assistance and growth potential.”

Having made the debut roster of recipients, Straw Hat will lead the pack of award winners who will be honored each month and featured on the America’s Hottest Franchise Web site (www.americashottestfranchises.org). DVD copies of the show can be sent to potential franchise owners…

The America’s Hottest Franchises show is available to view on the show’s website www.americashottestfranchises.org.

About America’s Hottest Franchises

America’s Hottest Franchises realizes that prospective business investors face an endless sea of information from the many franchise opportunities. Attending tradeshows brings a flood of voice mails, direct mail pieces and e-mails. With all the dollars spent on marketing it can sometimes be difficult to figure out which franchises offer the best opportunities for success, and which ones simply have huge marketing budgets. The organization provides an independent analysis of franchise opportunities for potential franchise buyers to help them cut through the clutter…

We see this type of advertising all the time. It is important that anyone considering this opportunity understand that it is advertising and not news. As always, when considering a franchise: Do Your Homework! And be sure to talk to as many of the current operators as you can. Their growth or lack of), marketing, history, and performance in the industry should all be disclosed in their disclosure document.

OK there are some good franchise opportunities, and there are some not so good opportunities. If you answer why Straw Hat is not growing, then you will realize the difference between the two. TG

    Tomas:

It must be good to win this prestigious award, right?

There is a lot of positive press and promotion being put out about Straw Hat Pizza franchise. Can you share your observations with those who might be considering investing in SHP? What questions should they be asking?

“Prestigious Award” is part of a well-written press release. Anybody looking into a franchise opportunity should first ask how well its newest stores are doing in sales and profits and what the cost was to open them.

Then do some simple math. If you are still interested in the franchise after that math, I would look at overall company growth and industry trends and try to understand if the brand was on the right side of both.

Tomas: You’re holding out on us. Do you know what the sales and start-up costs for the latest shops are? Why is Straw Hat not growing?

Sean, I agree with Tomas as to what someone should be looking at when considering a franchise. Pizza is a very tough and competitive segment, and only a few are doing well and growing successfully. Unfortunately, Straw Hat has the look of a brand in trouble - that is trying to drive growth through self-promoting press releases and wishful thinking. The only way to tell for sure is to look at their offering, and talk to their owners.

    Good points, Jeff.

Buying phony awards is always a bad sign to me.

I emailed Straw Hat Pizza PR person Nina Lesowitz of Spinergy Group a list of questions about the authenticity of the Hottest Franchises in America award. Not surprisingly, I never heard back.
