Franchise Advertising: Sad Day for the Ice Cream Man… & Burger King

by Sean Kelly on September 25th, 2008

(Franchise Pick) Related:  BURGER KING: What Were They Thinking?

It never fails… Burger King advertising always creeps me out.

Do you know what I mean?  From that weird guy in the King mask peering into women’s bedroom windows to promote breakfast at BK to the angry cow trying to murder its cheating human lover for eating the flesh of another species (Burger King Cheesy Bacon Tendercrisp Commercial 2008: “Make Out Point”), there’s always some creepy vibe going on.  For me, their commercials are just a little off the mark.

This “Sad Day for the Ice Cream Man” spot advances the creepiness into downright depressing insensitivity to me.

These are tough economic times for small business owners.  Yet Burger King promotes its 89 cent soft serve cones by celebrating the demise of ice cream vendors.  Where’s the humor in putting others out of business with low, low prices through low, low quality?

Maybe I’m being a bit too literal, but this spot strikes me as neither funny nor compelling… just insensitive, even mean-spirited.

I can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with next… maybe homeless, hungry ex-competitors being shooed away from a Burger King dumpster?  Now that would be a hoot.

I think you’re seeing this commercial too much like a marketing guy. Turn off this part of your brain for a second and you will enjoy this commercial. Like you, I sometimes feel a bit creeped out by BK commercial (the BK guy just gives me the creeeeeeps) but this commercial made me laugh. I saw the video without knowing what it was about and I was really wondering what the ending would be an dmore importantly who the advertiser was. I think they did a good job. Still, i’m not gonna stop by BK to buy this ice crean. I like my Ben & Jerry’s Americone Dream too much ;-)

I also shouldn’t have watched it right after posting on http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com.
I may be a little sensitive to the whole failed business owner thing, too.
But they have mastered creepy. All the way back to the BK “Where’s Herb?” campaign, which is one of Ad Age’s worst-ever commercials.
