"Are There ANY Reputable Coffee Franchises?"

by sean on January 21st, 2007

The ongoing Java Jo’z and Cuppy’s Coffee & More controversy prompted one Franchise Pick reader to ask: “Are there ANY Reputable Coffee Franchises?” The answer is a resounding YES.

Although there have been scams in the business opportunity arena (The FTC has brought numerous actions against so-called “rack distributor” business opportunities), most franchise companies IMHO are reputable and interested in building Win-Win relationships with their franchise owners. There is nothing to suggest that the coffee franchise segment of the franchise industry is any different than other food or retail franchise segments.

The next week or so will be “Wake Up & Smell the Coffee Week.” We’ll feature profiles of a variety of coffee franchise opportunities. Coffee franchise companies who wish to provide updated information on their franchise opportunities are invited to leave comments and/or send their information to franbestdotcom@yahoo.com.

Are There ANY Reputable Coffee Franchises?…

Of course, your post prompts the question, “How many coffee franchises can the world sustain?” It also reminded me of one thing that really brings on an attack of the peeves for me, which is when one of these franchises charges the same or more for a second-rate coffee as you can get down the road at a non-franchised shop where the owner takes pride in his or her barista competence and makes your coffee with love and skill. The second peeve trigger for me is when the franchise place wants me to drink my “coffee” from a paper cup, again at the same price or more as I would pay to drink it in a civilised way, ie from a real cup, down the road. Theft, breakage, yada yada, if you want to be in the coffee business, have some pride and do it properly - including figuring out a way to get your customers to help you not lose your china. Voice in the wilderness no doubt, but why should we let our standards drop just because someone has paid out a lot of money for signage and uniforms and haveaniceday staff training that unfortunately doesn’t seem to include how to make a real coffee? Demand the best! Hey, how would that be as a slogan for a coffee chain? Here’s a clue - observe the coffee makign process before sitting down: if the machine is clearly the jealously guarded domain of a proud owner or senior employee, providing quality coffees expertly, efficiently, one at a time, with skill and love, there’s a good chance you’ve come to the right place - you’ll know those people by the confidence and authority they exude. If when you observe you see that everyone is having a go at making the coffees as fast as they can, forget it, buy some bottled water and sit on a park bench so you don’t spoil your day.
