AAFD Franchise Tip #6: Look for Strong Rapport
The American Association of Franchisees & Dealers (AAFD) is a non-profit organization that acts to educate the public regarding fair franchise practices, quality franchise opportunities, and to expose the unethical practices. The AAFD recommends that individuals considering franchise opportunities should look for 8 elements to consider in a franchise. They believe all 8 are critical in selecting a good franchise opportunity.
TIP #6: Look for Strong Rapport.
According to the AAFD:
Your franchisor should have good relationships with its franchisees. Likewise, the franchisees should have a strong franchisee organization which has negotiating leverage with the franchising company. A franchisor who does not permit its franchisees to organize is a sure sign of trouble ahead. Strong franchisee associations, on the other hand, will pave the way to successful and cooperative franchising systems.
* From “8 Things to Look for in a Franchise” by the American Association of Franchisees and Dealers.
The best franchise companies see their franchisees as a resource and an asset, not just slaves in the galley, rowing their little hearts out. The truth is that there is tremendous brainpower and a vast experience base represented by the franchisees of a quality franchise organization. Smart franchisors are able to lead with a clear and strong vision, maintain adherence to the key elements of their brand and concept, yet also create a strong and dynamic relationship with franchisees. Good franchisors want franchisee input, encourage idea-sharing and welcome positive debate and dialogue.
The most successful franchisor of all time, McDonald’s Ray Kroc, understood this, as John Love points out in his book “McDonald’s: Behind the Arches”:
“Few people outside McDonald’s understand that Ray Kroc’s brilliance is found in the way he selected and motivated his managers, his franchisees, and his suppliers. He had a knack for bringing out the best in people who worked for him…. He succeeeded on a grand scale because he had the wisdom and the courage to rely on hundreds of other entrepreneurs.” (p.6)
